Surprise! The memory issues are back in Firefox

Started by Duncan Riley · 7 months ago

Numerous users of the latest version of the Firefox web browser (3.0.4 released yesterday) are reporting memory issues causing the browser to freeze up or crash. Firefox 2 was plagued with memory management issues, but users had thought Mozilla had put these behind them with Firefox 3.
In my ... Continue reading »

  • Still using 2.something here and I don't really have any problems unless I spend a few hours on a flash site. (Actually not very hard to do thanks to Pandora...)
  • No kidding. Why does Firefox NOT use WebKit yet? Ego?
I've been using the nightly build of FF, which works well, except it crashes EVERY TIME I download a file. Filed a bug report. Meh. I just use Safari to download stuff.
  • A quick look a mozilla's bugzilla shows a ton of posts on the issues, ranging from the memory usage (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46...) to the crashes. Whatever the final issue is, its apparent something is badly broken in the thing. I personally don't have any issues with the stable build (the nightly build crashed every time I tried to use google docs).
  • Why doesn't it use WebKit? Cause none of you seem to understand that the core of the expansibility of Firefox stems from it using Gecko.
I'm using 3.1 beta, and except for the download issue, (which i have solved by using FlashGot and an external tool to download things) I have no complaints.
Gecko is fine, it's being slimmed down all the time, and will hopefully live up to expectations with the 2.0 version of the engine.
  • 3.0.4 installed for two days , no crashes for me.

  • I am having trouble reaching their add-ons page today. Is the problem on my end or theirs?
  • get a PC!
  • the memory issues are also terrible on linux.

On windows, I have no problem at all. It's a shame that a browser that is supposed to be universally cross-platform is not. Mozilla consistently refuses to do proper development for any platform other than Windows/Intel.
  • Firefox has been created a lot of problems lately. I am going to stop use it.
  • Just use opera ;)
Losta features, low memory footprint, fast.
  • I hate FF for doing this! But i won't stop using it! Will perhaps shift to Opera for a while!
  • Stopped using FF a long time ago because of the bloatedness of this browser. With growing number of very capable alternatives FF team need to sort this out...
  • I am running Windows FireFox too and have been experiencing more crashes with 3.0.4 than I have ever had in my entire relationship with Firefox.
  • Since I am on Mac I really learned to live without all the plugins I used before and Webkit became my weapon of choice, except when doing dev work.
The slick, no thrills approach even made Chrome my main browser on Windows. Admitted, I miss the occasional plugin, but not that much either.
