I'd add one caveat - it all depends on the power and capability of the $800 laptop from Apple. As one who's made a bad purchase in the laptop department before, I know I'll be triple checking the specs on any "awesome deal, sub $1000 laptop."
To that end, though, there are plenty of sub $800 laptops that match or beat MacBook performance.
Even with Vista installed.

I have one of the $900 PC laptops running Vistaster that is a complete waste of 900 bucks.
