It is very true that we are just beginning to utilize things like Tumblr and FriendFeed for high-profile collaborative efforts, but our internal social programs have been very comprehensive and strong for many years now.

We have blogging, podcasting, wiki, networking, and file-sharing platforms internally, open to all IBM employees, that are extremely popular. They are tied together through our Enterprise (social) Tagging system and, all told, have transformed the way that I work, communicate and network everyday. Finding answers, experts, and building and joining communities through utilizing all of the social tools available to me has enhanced my personal brand, productivity and effectiveness dramatically.

As Karl mentioned above, we have vast numbers of IBMers on Facebook, Linkedin, Orkut, Twitter, and etc as well. What an exceptionally exciting time to be a part of a large organization that supports open collaborative work.

Re: Even old dogs like IBM can learn new tricks

I work at IBM which may be an "old" company but is made up a bunch of young (and young at heart) individuals that are well into all sorts of social media. You will find hundreds of us on Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed and anything else you care to mention.

One of the things we get asked for a lot is our social computing guidelines - essential for any organisation.
http://www.ibm.com/blogs/guidelines.html

And that blog on the Greater IBM has been going for sometime now as has, for example, the Global Innovation Outlook http://gio.typepad.com/

Look out for more in 2009

Re: Even old dogs like IBM can learn new tricks

Never discount Big Blue.

Re: Even old dogs like IBM can learn new tricks

Absolutely - I experienced the same thing when I found out Sun Microsystems were heavily into the virtual world thing as well.

Re: Even old dogs like IBM can learn new tricks

you are probably very correct with that but it has always struck me that when the subject of Web 2.0 comes up IBM is never - or very rarely - included as participant

Re: Even old dogs like IBM can learn new tricks

IBM also have a number of years work behind them in virtual worlds - they have big credibility in that area...
