The Inquisitr: Confirmed: Second Life, online adult games to banned outright in Australia

  • deancollins · 5 months ago
Woke up this morning to see that Australian politicians are on a tear and are proposing to ban SL and WOW to all Australians.

    http://laurelpapworth.com/australia-bans-filter...

Below is my comment to their proposal. Time to find new jobs you dinosaurs.

ha ha the internetz is dead to Australians, shame the pollies haven't worked out that even the most brain dead internet user can get around their filters.
Time for a "Pirate Party"/"EFF" style political membership organisation for the Australian federal givernment so that over tea and crumpets someone of their stature can take them to one side and point out they are living in a fairy land.
My recommendation is start a non taxable charity and run on this platform "Laurel Papworth for Presidentz of the Internetz".

    Cheers,
    Dean

Where's the freedom for people to do what they want and make their own choices in life?
  • SL Resident · 6 months ago
Are they going to ban Skype as well??? as gee on skype you can use webcam and actually get naked in real life and not use an avatar. What about all chat rooms to while you are at is as they can contain R Rated chat, oh and dating websites, while your at it you may as well screen all our emails just incase some sends one that falls in the "adult content" area.
Come on, Conroy, grow up, you are removing our civil rights as humans & Aussies, we arent all in kindergarten. Responsible parents ensure their children arent exposed to anything untoward. For a few that dont the majority of us are being penalised?
I suppose you will also have google blocked, as we might search something we shouldn't, while your at it block all news reporting sites as they sometimes show footage of blood & guts.

Australia is becoming more retarded for every year. Poor Aussies! I wouldn't wanna live there for sure.
  • Lillipilli · 6 months ago
This is absolutely ridiculous, we have done the age verification thing, proved how old we are, whats the problem?? in response to a previous comment, people make friendships on SL even relationships! i understand u think that there are other options like yahoo and skype for friendships, but where on there can u hug someone? u cant! Sure they are avatars but sometimes its the thoughts and actions that count, i am an aussie and have made friends with people all over the world in SL, from NZ to Canada to the USA to Germany, we run a club, i have a business and really enjoy myself. Not all of SL is a sex fest, and if this minister would pull his finger out of his ass and go and actually have a look he would be surprised at all the things there are to do on there. there are concerts for Relay for Life which raise real money in the end, there are Foundations which raise the awareness of cancer...the list goes on......they have introduced the fact that u need your car licence or other documents to be age verified before u can enter mature sims, so then why not do that to actually log onto sl so that youngsters cant access it at all!!!
  • Iris54 · 6 months ago
this is ridiculous!! Are we next going to be told what is acceptable for us to be wearing, and how to speak etc? thought this has been sorted already. There is a lot of money tied up for many of us in SL, if we are not allowed to be in SL, what happens to the money we have invested already? What about the many of us who for many reasons are not able to have social interaction in rl, who have friendships in Sl?? What happened to the freedom I thought we were famous for?? We might as well live in one of the countries where you have to have permission for everything. Hang your head in shame, whoever is making this decision!!!

this is bull, second life is 18+, and the censorship is about protecting children, children shouldn't even be fucking playing it anyway
  • One · 5 months ago
Well no, there is teen second life and it has a wide range of applications in education.
Ignorance like yours is what allows them to get away with it.
  • matthooper · 6 months ago
It will be interesting to see how Second Life and WoW are treated, that's for sure. It seems overkill if they do ban SL outright, particularly given the moves by Linden Labs to change the way adult material is handled (see https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features...). Surely it would be more reasonable to allow adults to opt-in to taking part in SL and WoW if they so choose. Btw - SL isn't just about the adult content, despite commonly held (mis)conceptions!
  • John E. Bredehoft (Empoprises) · 6 months ago
Clearly something to watch. In his writings, Duncan has been constantly lumping Australia and China in the same boat, and if access to the Second Life site is clearly restricted to Australians, many others will do so also.
  • ABDesignsinc · 6 months ago
Awsome, Second Life is 18+ but! Linden Lab's has the right to Merge the Teen grid with the Main Grid Which Will Happen In A Few Month's Because of This Mini Grid Called Zindra, So Really Second Life is gonna be Any Age Soon Cause When They Merge Those Grids To One it's gonna Be Weird.

    - Anthony M
  • Sam Darrow · 5 months ago
It's people like you who take statements from Linden Labs and create misinformation from the.

Yes LL is merging the teen grid with the main grid. However, that does not mean things will change. Teen SL and normal SL will still be seperate, residents from each will not be able to go to the other grid. So it is NOT like there will be people from Teen SL going into normal SL sims.

Please, if you don't know what's going on. Don't comment. Because all you're doing is just fueling misinformation.

People Like Me? Sam, I Know Mostly everything that go's down in Second Life with the Linden's I'm not just some Person who Just Mutter's out what Linden Lab's Say in advance.. So Don't call me It's People Like You Because i'm not a Idiot..

Well if that's true, then as an Aussie I say, I want out of this dammed country, I have an 3D gallery on secondlife in the pg sector of it, it is where I show my art and run a legit business, I make my living there, my 13 year old girl said how disgusting, basic internet safety taught by parents is all us kids need, so to our dear dictators, keep you filthy hands of our net!!!
  • Steven · 6 months ago
The reason it's news now is because Conroy just got around to answering the latest batch of Senator Ludlum's questions on notice in which he confirmed that games will be blacklisted - prior to this, many knowledgeable people in the debate assumed that they would somehow make an exception for games. See QON 1496(13) from the Hansard of Monday, 22 June 2009.

Shocking! The ignorance of Conroy (and the government) knows no bounds!

All it will do is force people to find more ways around it.

There are whole sims dedicated to promoting Australia!

If Linden Labs had done what they have been advised to do for many years now this could be avoided in Australia and potentially many other countries - an 18+ online game should require credit card verification of age by default. The fact age verification is optional yet exposure to pornographic content is not controlled is just asking for it - Linden Labs are bringing this on themselves.

That said an outright ban is not likely of the SL grid, there is no reason the Teen grid can not remain open. Australian government are showing their idiocy here by not even having an 18 rating system in place. It basically tells the rest of he world that there in Australia adults are treated like 15 year olds....

Poor, poor Ausies. and I thought New Zealand was bad for banning Mickey Mouse. Tsk, tsk, tsk.....glad i live in Canada....the best and possibly the most free country in the world.

The perception that Second Life is a grid-wide mass orgy should re-examined. I've been making a living in Second Life for the last two years selling my inventions and I can tell you - those people who see SL as only an online whorehouse are perverted sex addicts to begin with and when they log into the Internet (not just SL) that's ALL they look for. If you seek it, you shall find. To be honest I really don't care what other people choose to do with their Second Life and NEITHER should you. Second Life is a fantasy land, where you should be able to do anything you want without someone else forcing their opinionated rules on the metaverse society. If I buy a simulator in SL I should be able to build whatever I damn well please and YOU (who did not contribute to purchasing or maintaining the simulator) should stay out of my business. If you are a prude and don't like sex, don't search for it and don't visit adult simulators. Plain and simple. If you seek such things out you're a pervert and a hypocrite.

To those of you who spend so much time complaining about the adult content in Second Life, you need to first realize that copious amounts of adult images, video and games are available for free on the INTERNET. It is much easier to access high quality life-like pornography on the good 'ol WWW because the prevalence of such content is drastically higher there than it is in Second Life. Don't believe me? Do a Google search for any sex-related term and you get MILLIONS of results - most of which when you click on show explicit hardcore images or video.

To the parents who are saying 'we have to do it for the children' I say you're full of crap. If your child is on the INTERNET to download and access Second Life, they already have a vector for pornographic delivery that is MUCH more powerful than Second Life could hope to be. I truly see more images of naked people simply surfing the web for mundane things than I ever have in Second Life.

To those of you who say 'they should verify the identity with a credit card' I say you really are naive. Anyone wanting pornographic material, much more hardcore and realistic than SL could provide - could do a simple Google search for 'xhamster' or 'thumbzilla' or 'jesuslovesporn' and you will notice that these sites have enormous amounts of material that you can access for FREE with no credit card whatsoever. Dig a little further and you will find hundreds of thousands of websites similar to the ones mentioned above.

As I mentioned, I make a living in Second Life. The money I make there selling such things as particle effects, fireworks systems and custom made avatars puts food on our table, buys the diapers for my baby and allows me to work from home so I can enjoy spending time with the little one as he grows. When you slander SL and drive customers away from my products because of 'sex' or whatever, you are undermining my ability to continue providing for the well being of my family. So stop the slander about Second Life and stop trying to dictate my fantasy world. If you don't like it, you can get your own fantasy world and it will be exactly what you want it to be, somewhere else.

I am upset that i as a woman of 52 years will be penalised for the smaller population of under 18's....this is an outrage and more fitting for Russia. I have confirmed my age on any game that i play and do not partake in sexual activity...this i could do on Skype or any other format that a web cam would take me. How narrow minded and stupid waste of energy ...should we just ban the internet so that people no longer have the choice.
Furthermore, i am insulted that it is assumed that many who access the internet where some adults play such stupid activities, leads me to no longer be able to continue my friendships and exploring and learning.

Since INTERNET has come in play people are no longer as easily fooled by media which is perfect control mechanism of any government - this is the first step of taking our freedom, thinking and getting their control back. This is not Australian issue this is world issue and our freedoms depend on it.

Roll on Election time so this tool can be voted out . Honestly as a communications minister Im seeing someone that has perhaps a background in bricklaying ( Sorry Brickies) trying to understand the internet.
  • liasleandros · 6 months ago
This comes right on the heels of Linden Lab announcing Zindra as their new Adult only content continent - and then making it clear that non-adult content will be welcome in Zindra along with people who feel the need to wear child avatars in a continent advertised as the place in SL to access Rated X content. Coincidence I guess.

well my lad this country should have the American civil liberties union. This is not freedom of speach. And hense this gentleman has no right to dictate to others what they can or cant do in the privacy of there own home which he (as a government) tax out the bottom. This shoes once again how an elected official tries to gather the spotlight by picking up on a familiar subject. We have it here in the states and for the most part we are on to the fool who take there 15 minutes of fame.My country folk at heart they have no right to obstruct the use of anything that you are paying for in the freedom if your own home. Will he want to censor the use of television if he doesnt like the commercial or the show. It is shade of Joe McCarthy here in the state and if he is left go he will end up burning books and censoring your children cartoons. Will he have a censorship official at your sons football game when the coach curses at the officials.

People of Australia unite against this Morone, because he is looking for the spotlight only, appointing himself the keeper of rights. If it works there in australia as here in the states he is probably a pedifile or frequent brothels downtown. Keep you mouths open. Only for your own civial right. He works for you, he is your employee you pay him and elected him.

lol..they arent taking anyone away from you....they are censoring a game. Theres 10 million other ways you can communicate with someone Online.
  • idontthinksoaustralia · 5 months ago
You really don't get it do you? What about the companies that have invested thousands if not millions into building their SL business? What about the Universities that just had their virtual world classrooms ripped from them? What about the Big Pond sim which acts as a 3d advertisement for Australian Tourism? What about the fact the rest of the world think we are one big joke after this move? If you think it is only about communicating with another person, you really ought to get in there and try it before you bash it. I bet you work in Government right? It seems we should make all elected officials send a good ten hours in secondlife and see its use for education and business and THEN let them come out and say it needs to be censored!
  • bergah · 5 months ago
If I'm reading correctly, he never directly mentioned Second Life.. it was a catch-all R18+ rated games will be blocked using the Great Australian Firewall. Which will be easily by-passable, and hopefully will just get canned when they realise it wont work
  • luminarist · 5 months ago
you obviously do not understand concept of Second Life - KMOSCO has a partner in SL like I do - we live and work in SL and do things like in RL - skype just does not come close when you can dance, play, dress, attend parties and do mirid of social things in virtual world with person who might be thousands of KMs away.

and what about the businesses who use Second Life to facilitate their training, and for those of us who run businesses in there ? .. what about the fact that its a written medium, where some of the best brains in the world gather to brainstorm ideas, and to wring brilliance from each other in the form of the written word. What about the fact that - as one other said - perverts who want it will find it anywhere. I suggest that Mr Conroy had better get his ass into second life and see for himself, before he dares to infringe on our personal rights to go to , see, and " be" anything I choose in life, be that a beautiful fantasy woman or a worker that earns damned good money and pays his bloody wage.. Seriously NOT impressed Mr Conroy, and Labor have lost my vote forever over this.. SERIOUSLY not impressed.
  • doncable · 5 months ago
I live in Kansas, USA, and even the Republicans that control this state have not been able to close adult web sites, thanks to our constitutional freedoms, with their self serving mobocracy that has declared thier beliefs to be above any governmental laws. Denial of Freedom of Speach to Adults is nothing more than a mobocracy action that shows how they fear letting the truth be told or shared between nations of the free world.
  • skype too then? · 5 months ago
Second life is a social networking site not a game. Games have a quite different format -Its more like Skype, yahoo, or msn in its purpose.
Instead of chat rooms there are "Areas" like buildings and parks. A game within second life is like a trivia quiz or roleplaying chat room, with 3d.
If the govt bans SL they have to ban skype which has much worse adult activity, they have video of each other in that not "avatars" so skype is potentialy much more shocking. Too bad about the majority of use being not adult, but by the logic that might ban second life or call it a game, so must skype go.
  • mickstar007 · 5 months ago
This is down right ridiculous..I play and make money on SL, is an adult game and to take this away from me or anyone is just wrong..What the hell is wrong with this goody two shoes church going idiot thinking..It is an adult game for adults parents should know what there children are looking at when on line..I know I do..So this means you going to ban all porn sights, games with a little to much violence and sexual content..God get a grip there is more on tv so whats the problem..You do this no one will even bother about being on the net what would be the point..Get a life get you're head out of you're ass and help the police catch bad people and leave us and the net alone...

OMG, Whats wrong with this goody two shoes moron of a man..Leave the internet alone what it's for to have fun and to take it away by banning second life is wrong..Whats next banning games that have a little to much violence and sexual content..May as well ban WOW.. have any idea what really goes on there..For fuck sake I'm an adult and what I do and see and play on the internet is my buisness not some fool in the goverment..Leave the net as it is..no matter what you do or try there will be a way round it..Give the money where it's needed stop trying to dictate what we can and cant play or see on the net..I am ashamed to be an Australian when I feel I'm living in china or some other comy country where our freedom is being taken away by some idiot..Get a life and stick you're nose where the sun don't shine...Very angry and pissed..I tell you this who will use the internet if you ban second life and others will follow be no reason for the internet. Internet service providers beware you will loose many customers if this goes through and I will be one...PFFT!!!!

Fucking stupid if you ask me, you may think they are trying to protect minors from mature content, hence why they are making AGE VERIFICATION before the TEEN GRID IS MERGED.

And not only will this ban "protect" minors from SecondLife, it will fuck EVERYBODY who uses SL for financial gain who is from Australia over hard.

In my opinion, banning any game is stupid. If children are going on these places and buying these games, that should be left down to their parents, it depends if they are mature enough, personally, it shouldn't be left down to the government of wherever.

Sure there is a LOT of mature stuff in SecondLife, but even still, banning something isn't the answer, unless of course it was encouraging people into child pornography, but even then, that's up to the creators, Linden Labs, and the minors' parents.

    That is all.

Forgive me for my profanity, but it really boils my blood when something is banned because of minors...

What a load of crap! Honestly the government shouldnt and cannot tell us what we can and cannot do involving the internet. I hope it backfires majorly as Im quite an operator on Second Life and enjoy doing all kinds of things on it! Hell the teen grid on SL and the adult grids being merged they have stuck in MANY implementations to avoid teens getting into it such as age verification.
  • dawnzee993 · 5 months ago
Wow.....I'm an american and i can't begin to understand how they consider banning a game like SL. Yes it has adult content, but that is only a small small part of what this game is about. The content is mostly made by people just like us, everyday joes who come here and make some of the most interesting and beautiful worlds in a computer game! I have developed a large base of friends to talk to there....many of them are Aussies. While we communicate on many different games we play together now, SL is where we met..and where we all like to gather still, listen to a person stream music, laugh, joke, get a zombie hunting party together....all in good fun. Leave the parental blokes to the people who SHOULD be doing it....the parents!
  • Dogmeat · 5 months ago
This is outrageous, all Conroy and his cronies are doing is absolving people of the responsibility for raising their own kids. If you leave your kids in front of a computer with an internet connection and they look at porn it's not the government's fault. It's your fault for being a bad parent! These so-called "family" organizations make me sick, they aren't interested in helping families, at best they green light lazy parents who want the government to raise their children for them and at worst they are pushing a fascist right wing agenda to turn this great country into a totalitarian nanny state where everything is tailored to their repressive tastes. So much for freedom of expression!

I cannot BELIEVE what a horrible thing your country is doing. I always thought that Australia was relatively open minded. THIS totally proves me WRONG. Sighh ARE, you going to ban the internet next? Because I guarantee that you will find porn there too,
I want you to know that I am playing Second life on a Daily basis and I go in there to hear live music of which many of them are AUSTRALIAN, and to do my light shows. I DO not go there for SEX. What kind of morons are running your country anyway? I even have shows on YOUtube. ( OH maybe that's banned now too?) to prove that my light shows are not PORNOGRAPHIC!!!!
Second life is just like anything else. It's what you look for. People who look for porn will find it no matter what. Those of us that are into the creative part of SL realize that and shake our heads. Most of my friends are musicians and artists.

YOU will be only hurting your country by not allowing the artists and musicians play in SL, BOTH financially AND socially.
My best friend is from Australia and we toured California together. I wouldn't have met her if it hadn't of been for Second Life.
I personally was planning on touring your country next summer. This has caused me to rethink MY plans. Europe here I come.

I have several good friends from Australia that I play SL with and I am appalled that they would be denied access. Adults should be allowed to play any game they like but in any case SL isn't all about sex.And even if it was, let people decide what they want to do on their own. I don't think a few people being prudes should be allowed to decide for everyone. Some of my closets female friends I play SL with, are from Australia and it's just not right that I won't be able to see them.

Secondlife is Great Now with its New Adult,Mature & PG contents. Plus as soon as an under 18 is found on the game is banned instantly. Also for those People Stuck at Home with Sickness's & Injuries that in realife they have no hope of gettin a decent living or life. This game gave me inspiration & Hope into doing something with myself being stuck at home in a chair with massive back injury. Thats why its Called 2nd Life... What?? AUSTRALIA????? If it was NZ I might believe it but Oz? Internet gambling, political discussions of contentious issues, adult games? I am 69 and a woman and a Kiwi and can't believe this. I don't play any of these but hello? I do not think we have the right to stop other people enjoying such interests.

As for Second Life. My son has a business on SL, loves the fact that his mother visits and sees what he is doing and has even bought me a skybox so I have somewhere to go as my home there. I do all sorts of writing courses etc on SL. Did you notice Minister Conroy....I am 69. You need to educate yourself.

there is also a age verification inforce in secondlife .
If you cannot prove you are of legal age you will not be alowed into adult sites
    or even mature sights
There is plenty activities for minors in second life that is safe and protected.

They also have age verification enforcement ...you must prove you are of legal age in order to enter a mature or adult sight.
they also have much to do for minors here in protected sights , good wholsome fun and entertainment.
you lot like to throw out the baby with the bath water mentality is shameful.
    something from the darkages
    shame on you !

Well where do I start...... this is ludicrous....do these people know how much support Australian victims of flood & fire were given through SL??? SL is not all about bad content as these so called do - gooders seem to think! Linden Labs are requiring age verification now........ maybe more proof of our age perhaps...but NOT banning SL outright.that is ridiculous..... How can we be told what we can & can't do. I am a grown adult with the right to think for myself, thank you very much!!! I have a job in SL....and have made some wonderful friends ...... It has been the most wonderful thing for me.... it is a life despite what some people seem to think....... I can do things in there that I could never ever do in real life...it is wonderful!!!

They might as well ban the rest of the internet. There is porn out there. You search anything on google and your bound to find sort of pornographic material.

... And I thought limiting bandwidth was bad enough... Christ...

Taking SL away from my Aussie friends... will be hurting not only them but a mass amount of people world wide. The virtual businesses owned...The sims and parcels run will disappear. As many before me have said...SL is not just for SEX or PORN. It is a way to meet and learn. Create and Love.... And to some, make a living.

With this said. I am HOPING this is all just a hoax. A joke. A false statement.... And if not... The Australian government will be seeing an upcoming riot.

Exclusively online games are not submitted to the OFLC for classification.
......exclusively online, exclusively multiplayer, and has no defined start and end. Thus it is inherently unclassifiable.

Therefore all the flaming torches and pitchforks would seem moot. But lets keep them handy just in case.

I've lived in Perth all my life. I'm a professional animator who some day wants to get into the video games industry. All this is doing is making all our talent want to leave for other countries. Because I sure as hell am if this goes through. This is only going to end in a large nation wide protest, I can guarantee it. They really need to sack Conroy, his views are far to extremist.
  • kizmut · 5 months ago
The greater mis-conception here is that they are banning adult games. Since when is SL a game??

I'm not Australian so I don't know this guy Stephen Conroy but I presume that he is a right-wing Christian lunatic. Part of me thinks: "if you vote in crazies like him, you get crazy laws like this". But really... banning SL is pathetic. At worst it's simulated sex between consenting adults, and at best it's genuine friendships between people across the world. There are long-term relationships ("partnerships") in SL that involve both (friendship and sex). Many lonely and/or sexually frustrated people find some sort of solution in SL. Maybe Stephen should put his Bible down and get laid in SL.

This is hysteria at it's worst. First of all, Australia happens to be a functional democracy and the government formulates policy according to the wishes of its electorate, so your characterisation of the government as some harbinger of a totalitarian state is inaccurate and infantile.

The problem is there are a lot of parents that cannot control what their kids do on computer, be it through their own laziness, ignorance or otherwise. From personal experience I can tell you it's simply not possible to control what kids in this society may or may not do, suitable or not, and preventing them from using the internet is just not tenable. The net result is that lazy or intolerant people fall back on a 'higher power' to do their parenting, which in this case is the government. This is a mistake, but it's understandable in terms of human nature.

This is the motivation behind the ostensible reason for the governments actions. I say ostensible, because the government knows full well that the filtering concept is flawed and unsustainable. They have to give the appearance of genuinely trying in order to placate the ignorant mob pleading with them to save themselves. This plan will run its course, serve its political purpose and then be quietly shoved away never to be heard of again. Most of the time the people running the country are not nearly as stupid as they appear, and are undoubtedly smarter than you. Some really are very stupid, such as that Family First twat or that ambitious idiot that tried to remove the Prime Minister on the basis of a fraudulent email.

Finally, the ALP would hardly attract votes from bible bashers, most of whom would equate ALP voters as agents of satan, which really underlines your general ignorance of the political scene in Australia and what in fact the government is doing.

I suggest that if you really have a problem then take it to your local member so that your opinion is held in equal measure to all those scared parents. You are old enough to vote aren't you?
  • Jeremy · 5 months ago
"The reason it's news now is because Conroy just got around to answering the latest batch of Senator Ludlum's questions on notice"

Thank God for the Greens. The problem for voters in Australia is that the Liberal Party (the major conservative party) want a filter too. They're currently using it to bash the ALP, but it was their idea when they were in Government.

The Greens are the only party who have consistently and vigorously defended our freedoms on this issue.

This is Garbage. Second Life has not yet been classified by ACMA so even if this *proposed* internet scheme were to go through tomorrow it would not be banned until it went under review. The internet scheme is currently just a proposal which is technically not possible to implement in an effective and efficient manner. It will probably end up as an opt-in scheme that ISPs need to *offer* to parents which does customisable filtering.
Stop spreading FUD like this, it does nothing to help anyone.
I study Information Technology Security at University and have been following the legal and technical aspects of the internet filtering scheme for a while.
  • Gerbils · 5 months ago
I don't see how that statement is a confirmation at all. If you're working off of the SMH article (which I can only assume you are), the only mention of Second-Life was by someone who wasn't Senator Conroy (it was actually by an engineer and avowed critic of the filter system).

In fact, it still sounds like it'll be a complaint based system. I.e, if they get a complaint, and THEN find the material fits the RC category, then they look at filtering. Of course, it only takes one person to spoil the party... :P

I'm not saying this isn't something to be concerned about. Just don't jump the gun because someone runs a slightly sensationalist headline.

Conray shows he is being willfully ignorant

Unlikely. OFLC have said that multiplayer games are "open and inherently unclassifiable" unlike closed boxed games. But makes for some nice linkbait :P

Australia's ban of Second Life and other similar sites sets a dangerous precedent that should strike fear into the hearts of free people everywhere. A "free" country that has a "Minister for Censorship!?" This is something we might expect from China, North Korea or Iran, but Australia!? The Nazis would be so proud!

Those who call themselves "Christians" or "Moral," might see this as a "victory" over "evil." But for them, as well as all who applaud this travesty of freedom I will quote Benjamin Franklin, who said:

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

It appears the people of Australia are still prisoners, exiled as were their forefathers and permitted only the "freedoms" their masters deem fit. It will be interesting to see if they accept this Orwellian destiny or rise up and demand the freedoms so many of them have given their blood to defend around the world.

As for Second Life (SL) and its "danger" as a source of adult content; SL is no more or less dangerous than the rest of the Internet. Those who wish to can find virtually anything they want on the Internet, good, bad or indifferent.

It should be up to adults and parents, not a "Nanny State," to take the steps necessary to limit exposure to content they deem inappropriate for themselves or their children. This can be done at the individual PC or user level.

By banning access to Second Life, the Australian government is not only cutting off access to "adult" content, but also art, music, education and collaboration opportunities that have the potential to enlighten, inspire and improve the lives of its citizens, young and old alike. If the government of Australia succeeds in censoring SL from their citizens, those of us who work, learn and yes "play" in Second Life will miss the tremendous spirit and contributions our Australian brothers and sisters make to SL everyday.

I close with a quote from another of our (American) Founding Fathers, that I hope will be taken to heart by all those who love freedom in Australia and around the world:

""The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Thomas Jefferson

If there is such a child who is intelligent enough to swidle his/hers parents and register, download and log into Second Life undetected, then afterwards get age verified in order to access an adult region within Second Life- this child is certainly old enough to beat off in privacy and safety of this horrendously dangerous social medium.

I think stating that is has been confirmed is bit misleading - these are plans not confirmations, it still needs to go through process like everything else. I am sure that people that play WOW and Second Life as well as digital content creators who's livelihood depends on this will not allow this to happen.

I would not panic as yet.

That's just simply democracy. Oz normal free tv channels news only have their own news, only the big ones like Michael dead was on. Sports have 99% oz sports. No world news hardly to be seen. If they do ban SL, they should ban the entire internet access indeed.... what a shame..
  • Cukiez · 5 months ago
omg.. that's a bit harsh tho.. I mean putting a direct ban on all the equivalent games!!
I mean how can you make peoples getting forbidden playing games like that!
And a funny detail.. in SL you simply have the decision receive pornograhic material etc.. which doesn;t mean it's an essential part of Second Life...

All with all.. This decision has been made too fast and withut even thinking about peoples who are so into the SL world.. there are enough folks who are earning their money (by selling stuff and their much time/trouble intensive homemade/brew clothing).. and now the very possibility will be take away from them like it's nothing..

Too bad it has to go that far like that..:\

It’s already happened, I verified my age and everything is there, but I cannot access any adult areas.

When I do it crashes the whole SL Client, if I try to login from last location it screws up and crashes until I tell it to go to a PG area…

Well i second the motion what australian political goverment agreed on. Because where also commiting to banned Second here in Asia in the next political conference on asian nations namely Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, and Korea leaving that idiotic game only there in western nations only... since it top most of the gaming online violation here in asia.

    Namely:

    a. Rude unknown gestures,
    b. users disputes,
    c. sexual violence and simulation against women and children,
    d. Explotation of women and child simulation,
    e. to many sexual genital availability to users even really not needed and against the law to walk in asia naked.
    f. Gambling, and corrupt second life goverments to pausing there own monetary virtual money and charging real money for something that is not real,
    g. corrupt land owner ship and sales of land for just a online game and charging US dollar which is not the monetary fund money here in asia.
    h. Unfair treament to people and free users of secondlife,
    i. and to many griefers most of the time while online,
    j. child access to illegal 3d software here in asia namely secondlife without restriction which is also illegal,
    k. unsafe use of credit cards from hackers of secondlife,
    l. no technical support or no support at all to foreign asian pc and asking to much system resources system requirement for a online stupid game like 2gb memory, 3ghz processor, lots of disk space.

What do you think of money that are use to buy those items. Money don't fell from the sky you know. People here hard earn every bit of cent to earn a living. not like in america people just sit around and waiting for a pay check from the government that does'nt exit here in asia.

so it come to our attention if second life don't change there attitude in doing online business we will be force to put it in the next asian conference of nations to banned second anywhere in asia and auto delete from any access point to any given service provider server online. once read and captured online anywhere to prevent downloading its software and accessing it's website permanently.

Really? Is World of Warcraft included on the list? Well, I think those vulgar or sexually explicit games are justifiable to be banned in Australia except for these MMOs like WoW which provides us fun and entertainment. What's your classification of "Adult" games anyway? Is farming wow gold part of it? If it is, that's certainly an absurd idea! We have to bear in mind that the problem is never the game, it's the person playing it.
