Detective Wendi Berndt told the Los Angeles Times the man had been involved with the church in the past.

"There was a previous relationship, but it is unclear to what degree," Berndt said.

Calls to Scientology representatives on Sunday were not returned.

His name was Mario Majorski. He was a former Scientologist. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/us_world/2008/1...

Issue #318 of The Auditor, a Scientology magazine, lists him as an attendee of the "Saint Hill Special Briefing Course" in 2004.

The dead man's name was Mario, a very colorful character who had tattoes on his arms and chest and the S and double triangle symbol of Scientology tatooed on his right shoulder. He was a former member of the Church of Scientology. A scary looking dude indeed, but he loved going to different bars and seeking out strange places and mixed company. He said he never had anyone start a fight with him. No wonder!
He had great communication skills, a brilliant chess player, and was generous to a fault. I have no idea what his grudge was with the Church, unless (speculation only) they had refused him further services.
