I usually recommend picasaweb, smugmug and www.bluemelon.com since I find them the best - it does depend on what you need and if you want to pay for it (smugmug is only paid)

I would recommend Ipernity (www.ipernity.com). It is a lot like Flickr could have been, in my opinion.

Smugmug! Definitely the best choice among the alternatives above. It is worth every cent you pay.

I would also recommend Photrade.com (because I work there). We are in invite only, but we help Photographers share, protect and make money from their photos. So you can share your photos like Flickr but also protect them with custom watermarking, sell them and earn ad revenue.

We are currently invite only (you can request an invite on the site) or use invite code TWIP (may only be valid for a short time).

We'd love you hear your thoughts on the site :)

Photobucket deleted my account several months back citing I was hosting pornographic content - which was strange as the account had been inactive for months and I never used it to upload much aside from the 10 or so personal photos I stuck on there to begin with.

After a total of 24 back-and-forth eMails which escalated to management, their final word was that they can do whatever they want with my pictures and they did not want to review their decision, stating that they received a complaint so they actioned it.

No option for appeal, no way to recover my photos.

Naturally, I backup all my photos on two separate services so I'm not too worried about the lost pictures however the experience had left a bitter taste in my mouth.

In my opinion it is the service with the closest functionality match to Flickr and an active European community.

The competitors to Flickr need to catchup on the range of third party tools that support them for me. You can do just about everything with Flickr from someone elses tools. I will wait for Flickr to screw me over before considering changing!
